🦷 Gingivectomy Aftercare

Gingivectomy is a safe and effective procedure to remove excess gum tissue and improve aesthetics or periodontal health.

To ensure a smooth, complication-free recovery, carefully follow the instructions below:

❄️ 1. First 24 hours: rest and cold compresses

  • Avoid hot, hard or crunchy foods

  • Do not rinse vigorously or spit forcefully, as this can dislodge the clot and delay healing

  • Drink plenty of ice-cold water on the first day, as cold water on the treated area reduces bleeding

🍽️ 2. Light, cold diet

  • Prefer soft, cold or lukewarm foods, such as purées, yogurt, cold soups and natural juices

  • Avoid acidic, spicy or seeded foods

  • Do not use straws, as suction can interfere with healing

🪥 3. Careful oral hygiene

  • Brush your teeth as usual, without forcing the treated area

  • Use an extra-soft toothbrush

  • Floss very carefully, but don't skip it

  • If indicated, use an alcohol-free antiseptic mouthwash as prescribed

  • Do not put objects in your mouth (such as toothpicks, nails or pens)

🛌 4. Avoid physical exertion

  • Stop strenuous physical activity for at least 2-3 days

  • Keep your head slightly raised when sleeping, especially for the first 2 nights

🚭 5. Avoid tobacco and alcohol

  • Smoking and alcohol impair healing and increase the risk of infection

  • Avoid them for at least 7 days, or as clinically advised

💊 6. Take your prescribed medication correctly

  • Take the painkiller during the first 24 hours and afterwards only if you have pain

  • If other medication has been prescribed (an anti-inflammatory or antibiotic), do not stop taking it on your own, even if your symptoms improve

⚠️ 7. Watch for warning signs

Contact the clinic if you notice:

  • Heavy or persistent bleeding

  • Severe pain that does not improve with medication

  • Pus, fever or a bad smell in the treated area

📅 8. Follow-up visit

  • Attend your follow-up appointment on the scheduled date

  • The dentist will check the healing and perform a professional cleaning if needed
